Need some straight scoops since this will be our first time going thru St. Thomas and ferry over to Road Harbor, Tortola.

The previous 16 BVI bare boat sailing vacations , we flew into Beef Island. This next trip we will by pass PR, and the cost of Cape Air.

Route of flight this next trip in May 2019

LAX...MIA.....STT American Airlines. Two nights on St. Thomas and ferry to Tortola. ( R/T)

Getting in late at night at STT and will stay in nearby hotel for two nights to de-lax .

Need to take a ferry but have read some very not good reports on that mode of transportation.

Also read that Customs fees were $ 10,00 to $ 55.00 per person. Seems like $ 10.00 is what is published by the official release of information. We have no problem with ten bucks or so.

Also, it is first come first served at the ferry, regardless of having a we need to line up about an hour or so head of departure time.

Also, read that no matter who we reserve with, the luck of draw is the norm, as the actual ferry company boat that we board could be one of many other companies not who we reserved with.

And, the arrival and departure times can often be quite a few hours off of scheduled times.

The above was from reading yelp and reviews by visitors .

We also checked into a water taxi, and it is pretty expensive, and so that idea is not on the table.

We understand that we have no choice but to take the ferry, but wold like to know the factual ferry procedures and what we really can expect and to be prepared.

Also read that one of the ferry companies , might have been the fast ferry, has three new boats but they are awaiting permits from the govt to put them in actual service.

Heard also to book the first ferry of the day to make sure that we get to Tortola without being cancelled. And to get the ferry dock early and line up .

Any factual info and tips that would aid in our planning would be appreciated.

We will be bare boat sailing out of Conch Charters, Road Harbor for two weeks, mid may 2019 just Erica and I. Boat deposit is paid. Still need to reserve hotels in St. Thomas, near the ferry dock, as well as one night at Ft. Bert, and our airline . Or would Red Hook be a better option.

I know we are well ahead of the power curve, but planning ahead and being prepared to keep life easy has worked for many years.

Thank you

Denny and Erica
