See this article at www.bviplatinum.com/news.php?articleId=1469583798

Hubert O'Neal is proposing turning Anegada into a gigantic transshipment port. He came over to Anegada in early July for a "town meeting" where he pitched his idea. Most of the people at the meeting thought it was a joke and actually laughed at O'Neal.

The article says that residents were "receptive". That is not exactly true. Most opposed the idea, and only a few seemed to be in favor of it.

If implemented, this would destroy Anegada as we know it today.

He needs to take a ride out over the east end on BVIPirate Air and point out where exactly he'd bring in a huge container ship. No open water there without tearing out a bunch of reef. I love hearing all these ideas! Never fails to amuse!!

Dumb idea - but entertaining to watch.....where do these people come up with this stuff? Follow the money, I guess.

Of course the BVI doesn't have nearly enough money to pull this off.
However, there's probably enough money for some of O'Neal's buddies to study it for a while until they figure out it's not financially feasible. hairy doh tonguea

And that is exactly what will probably happen. Just one more way to take the public's money.

Been sailing a good part of the planet, and lived on Kauai Island, Hawaii, for 10 years...

Personal observations :

"Developers and cruise ships destroy an island." Or a harbor .

On kauai, we had bumper stickers that said " Die Developers Die "

BVI ; the Baths ( two trips back ), we could not even get into the boulder entrance next to the beach to go thru the Baths.
.
Hundreds of cruise ship passengers with their wrist bands. So we tossed our t shirts an up on a tree limb,an snorkeled from the beach on the outside of the Baths over to Devils Bay....really like the beach there.

Then snorkeled back, got a couple of Red Stripes, talked to one the the ships cruise directors, she was cool. Those bands on the boat peoples wrists were so she could identify and round up her passengers. Get em back on the correct ship.

After two Red Stripes, we humped it up to the Top of the Baths....Great place, Pain Killers, swimming pool, lunch and super view of the islands. Turned missing the Baths into a positive and fun experience.
We had been visiting the baths for 34 years, so not a big deal. For newbies it would be .

Cane Garden bay is another example of being super mobbed by cruise ship passengers. We got that scoop from Myetts.....we missed all that by just a few days. The bars and restaurants and beach was totally inudated with the masses from the cruise ships. Happy we missed all of that.

White Bay and the Soggy Dollar. Jost. They were chocked to the gunnesl with day trippers, and we could not even get close to the bar. Plan B and C. Gertrudes or Hendos next door.

We can slide into different fun plans in a hot second, and keep the fun light illuminated.

It is what it is, and find ways to work around or by pass cruise ship days.

We always check the cruise ship schedules before considering a trip to The Baths or Cane Garden Bay.

Best thing to come out of Irma - no cruise ship passengers at CGB this year. The "official" beaches on the island tours are Long Bay (Beef Island) and Brandywine Bay.

Assume a "Like" emoji.

It is good news.

Long Bay Beef and Brandywine: two good ways to keep any of them from coming back.
