St. John, US Virgin Islands, is mostly a national park and generally unspoiled.
Caneel Bay, on the Western side of St. John, boasts a beautiful sandy beach, the very exclusive Caneel Bay Resort/Hotel, and many moorings. Moorings can be a bit rolly for monohulls because of the ferry traffic into the bay and throughout Pillsbury sound. In the western side of the bay visiting yachtsmen clearing into the USVI can temporarily grab a mooring ball and then dingy south into Cruz Bay to clear customs. There is a dock at the resort where you can drop crew off to take a taxi into Cruz bay; however, you cannot leave a dingy at the resort dock. The resort staff frowns a bit on the use of the beach, restaurant, bar and dock by visiting yachtsmen. There are nice beaches south of the mooring field and good snorkeling around the rocks at the western end of the bay.
