We have just returned from a month in the BVIs and the best provisioning we found was from One Mart, they will pick you up from any location on Tortola and return you back, help you with your supplies to the boat or dinghy, get this no charge. they are trying to get the boating crowd. Prices are lower and the selection is as good or better than RiteWay.

Call Alberto at 1 284 499 2359 very helpful and friendly, also got us a taxi for our trip home

We have always used One Mart and been very pleased. It doesn't feel like a grocery store in the States, but they've got what we want and need at good prices and have always been helpful.

We shop at all of the markets very often. Out of all of them, only Riteway will feel like a supermarket in the US. Here are my opinions of all of them:

One Mart
  • Produce: Good selection, excellent quality, excellent price.
  • Fresh meat: Mediocre to poor.
  • Frozen meat: Fair selection, excellent quality, superior price. Their frozen beef tenderloin is amazingly good.
  • Staples: Fair selection, poor freshness (have had to toss out a lot of things because they were full of weevils).
  • Overall Selection: Fair.
  • Overall rating: Fair.
Riteway (Pasea)
  • Produce: Superior selection, good quality, fair price.
  • Fresh meat: Best by a wide margin. Superior selection, superb quality, good price.
  • Frozen meat: Superior selection, excellent quality, excellent price.
  • Staples: Best selection, best quality, good price.
  • Overall Selection: Best by a huge margin
  • Overall rating: Superior.
RTW
  • Produce: Poor selection, good quality, excellent price.
  • Fresh meat: None.
  • Frozen meat: Fair selection, good quality, superior price.
  • Staples: Poor selection, excellent quality, superior price.
  • Overall Selection: Poor.
  • Overall rating: Fair.
Bobby's (Road Town)
  • Produce: Good selection, excellent quality, fair price.
  • Fresh meat: Extremely poor.
  • Frozen meat: Fair.
  • Staples: Fair selection, excellent quality, good price.
  • Overall Selection: Fair.
  • Overall rating: Fair.
Supa Valu
  • Produce: Good selection, superior quality, fair price.
  • Fresh meat: None.
  • Frozen meat: Good selection, excellent quality, fair price.
  • Staples: Poor selection, excellent quality, fair price
  • Overall Selection: Poor in the front, but has a surprisingly good selection in the back, out of sight. You have to ask if they have it.
  • Overall rating: Very good.
When we shop, we generally go to (in this order): One Mart (to look at produce), RTW, Riteway, One Mart (to buy produce), Supa Valu. We go to only Bobby's as a last resort, and are usually disappointed.

The reason that we go to One Mart to look at produce is to see what produce they have and what condition it is in. Then we go to RTW and Riteway. There, we buy what produce One Mart did not have or what looks to be fresher than One Mart. Then back to One Mart to finish buying produce. When you are buying produce that has to last 2 or 3 weeks, you need to get the freshest available.

For us, it takes about 2 hours of shopping to provision Hidden Treasure for 2 to 3 weeks.

Things to know:
  • Monday and Tuesday are the worst days to shop for produce.
  • Wednesday is the best shopping day for produce. The bins have just been stocked from fresh containers from Florida.
  • Supa Valu is the supplier for most of the restaurants. The front end of Supa Valu is tiny, but they have almost everything in the back. If you are not a local restaurant owner, you cannot go into the back and browse - you have to ask for specific things if they are not out front.
  • The butcher shop at Riteway is excellent. Their fresh meat rivals most grocery stores in the US.
  • Bacon: Supa Valu has the best bacon (Jamestown) - currently about $5/lb. Bacon is $8/lb or more everywhere else. Jamestown bacon has nice thick slices. We think it is much better than Oscar Mayer (what everyone else has). Do not buy Aberdeen Farms bacon (RTW/Riteway) unless you like your bacon paper-thin.
  • Only One Mart has Jimmy Dean's Sausage. No one else even has bulk sausage. (Turkey sausage is NOT sausage!)
  • Buy wine at Tico Cash & Carry or at Caribbean Cellar.
  • Buy liquor at Tico Cash & Carry or at RTW.
  • Buy beer (except Carib) at RTW. Buy Carib beer at One Mart or at Caribbbean Cellar.
  • Only Riteway has buttermilk. And only about 50% of the time. (We like homemade ranch dressing!)
  • If you can only shop at one store, it absolutely should be Riteway. None of the others are even close.
  • If you have time, get a Tico Wine Club card. Having it saves a lot of money.
