A number of years ago I bought a sectional fishing pole from 71-North because it fits easily in checked luggage.
This offshore-class rod has survived a number of trips to the islands and is very rugged. It is rated to 40-lb test, and has been well tested with Mahi, tuna, and barracuda.
Paired with a Penn 310GT2 reel it makes an excellent trolling rod. With a baitcasting reel you can change things up and cast out to the fish breaking on the water that we often see in the islands on a morning sail.
I found a small hand-gaff that will fit in the rod-case with the rod, so it doesn't take up any extra room in the suitcase, and it's also better protected. This gaff can be used as-is, or duct-taped to an extra boat-hook or broom-handle you can easily get your hands on in the islands.
